AO shows pattern little better than inverted-L, (vertical polarization), 30 ohms driving point impedance, and the wire can be streched from the nonmetal support 24m above gnd, at the roof of the house... This is kind of half-loop. The new millenium got off to a great start with some excellent conditions today. Tonight around 2200Z, JA6BZI was heard on the long path from the SE on 1910 kHz (QSX 1831). Unfortunately he didn't hear me! The tipoff were the "beacons" I mentioned here recently. The JA BC station on 3925 and North Korea on 2850 were booming in as loud as I have heard them this season on the SE long path. Singapore on 3915 was also very strong tonight. This morning just before local sunrise I worked KH2/K4SXT and JH0INP, both on the SW skew path, which normally is a very marginal path from here in eastern MA. JA0MVW and JA1CGM were also heard weakly on this path. Again the beacons on 3925 and 2850 were exceptionally strong, this time from the SW. This meant that the Beverage had got to go! Its last serious engagement was the recent Stew Perry TBDC, in which it often made the difference between reading a signal or losing a contact in the summer atmospheric noise. However, in its place, I have run another 'Stealth' Beverage which runs in the same general direction, in a piece of public bush that lies adjacent to her land. Where as my old 440' Beverage started off about WNW to ENE and slowly veered in a slightly more southerly direction as it went onto her land, the new one is about 60' shorter and holds the line WNW to ENE. The only other physical difference between the two antennas is that the last 180' or so of the new Beverage is made up of very thin black plastic-coated hook-up wire - about 26 gauge and consisting of only a few very thin strands of copper wire - in order that it is as invisible as possible. To my disappointment, the new Beverage (which actually consists of the first 200' of the old Beverage) seems to give a noticeably lower output than the old one and is hardly ever a better Rx antenna (in terms of signal to noise) than my inverted vee dipole Tx antenna. I am somewhat surprised at the difference in performance between the two antennas and have put it down to the missing 60' or so in length. I am also a bit concerned about the continuity of the hook-up wire on the new Beverage, particularly when it tightens in the wind. What do people out there think? Could my loss of signal/performance be down to the reduction in length, poor continuity in the new Beverage end section, or are the other factors I should consider? At the moment, I have not looked at the matching of the new Beverage, which is fed with the same 9:1 homebrew matching xfr as the old one, but I guess checking/improving this could be an idea... Both the old and new Beverage are unterminated. Signals on the new one seem down in both a westerly and an easterly direction from the old one. One interesting thing is that the new Beverage seems to work as well as the old one did on 80m (output and s/n ratio-wise), making me think that for some reason the new one is somehow too short for 160m. Any ideas would be appreciated. I heard (but did not work) JA4LXY on 1911.9 around 2200Z tonight via the SE long path. Signals were in for about 5 or 10 minutes at 449. This is a very marginal path which opens only very rarely. Again the "beacons" were exceptionally strong tonight, especially North Korea on 2850 kHz. I'll continue listening over the next two weeks, as we are probably at the seasonal peak right now. A short Beverage really suffers when unterminated. That's because the wire near the open end does nothing, there is no current flowing into the open circuit......... so effectively the antenna is "shorter" than a terminated wire the same length. The longer the Beverage the more it "self-terminates", because of coupling to the lossy earth below the wire and a much lesser extent radiation. Models do not show this effect well. Steve also could have a break in the wire. The problem with any "less than ideal" antenna is subtle changes can make the antenna appear to stop working.
