 The simple answer for newly created archives is to put these in your rc file:

     folder_by_date="%y%m"
     usegdbm = 1

 This is in the FAQ: http://www.hypermail.org/openfaq/10.html Why do other people on this list keep mentioning the older, more complex ways of doing this?

 For deleting older messages, look at these options (see the hmrc.html docs): delete_older
delete_msgnum

 For redoing the archive with no mbox, you probably want to use contrib/hypetombox.pl to create an mbox, the delete the archive directory, and recreate it from the mbox. This is probably the only way provided by hypermail to move old messages into monthly directories.  Alternatively, if you only need to produce smaller index files and don't care about the performance problems with putting all the files in one directory, you can try the monthly_index = 1 option and you won't have to rcreate the archive.
