I don't have access to the repository also, but my local copy was quite new (Last ChangeLog entry from Nov 14, 2007), and I applied the patch and it ran smoothly. It also fixed a charset problem I had in some 2004 mailbox similar to the description you give. So I do recommend this patch with all my heart.
