        I _think_ what people want to see here are things like 2alpha<whatever>, and increment that <whatever> as patches get applied till we get a stable release / or beta, in which case we'll have one called 2beta<whatever> before it becomes an actual release - say 'Version 2', or 2.1, whatever.

        I don't know, I may be completely off here...
