[ WARNING: this is long ]
Problem one:
Take the following header on a message:
Subject: Re: Dumb Question?
From: Ashley M. Kirchner (ashley_at_pcraft.com) Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 17:34:57 -0700 (MST)
The only link in that header is the 'From:' line where it puts a mailto: link as the email address...BUT...it also adds quite a few other information that, to my opinion, isn't necessary:
[ NOTE: broken into multiple lines for readability ]
<STRONG>From: </STRONG>Ashley M. Kirchner (<A
HREF="mailto:ashley_at_pcraft.com?subject=Re:%20Dumb%20Question?&replyto= \
Pine.LNX.4.10.9903231728520.3602-100000_at_users.pcraft.com"><EM> \
ashley_at_pcraft.com</EM></A>)<BR>
If it's just a link to the person's email address, there's no need for the subject and replyto to be included. Each message already has a 'Reply' link, in which this information is, um...somewhat needed, well, the subject line is needed, the replyto won't do some people any good.
On a side note, I much rather see links be included between <>, not parenthesis like they are now.
Problem two:
This particular archive has the following footer attached to each message:
See those email addresses? Well, not only is hypermail converting them to links - as it should - but it's also adding information that, again, is not needed:
[ NOTE: broken into multiple lines for readability ]
<A HREF="mailto:wwwcount-request_at_yeehaw.com?subject=Re:%20Dumb%20 \
Question?&replyto=Pine.LNX.4.10.9903231728520.3602-100000_at_users.pcraft.com"> \
wwwcount-request_at_yeehaw.com</A>
The fun part is that it also converted the 'your-email_at_domain.com' sample to the same fashion. Now granted, there is no way for hypermail to distinguish between what's a valid address and what not, but adding extra information where not needed/wanted can't be a Good Thing (TM), now can it?
Problem three (oh hell, it's the same damned thing):
Take my signature:

Boulder, CO 80303 .................. . . . . [ Ok, so it's slightly different from what you see at the bottom of this message - it's just your imagination, ok? ] Again, hypermail is converting my email address to one that contains a subject and replyto line. Doesn't belong there. If you need a more 'hands-on' experience, go to the archive in question <http://wwwcount.yeehaw.com> and pick like the March (this year) archive, then pick any of my messages, or any of Muhammad Muquit's messages. Check out the source on those messages. Incidentally, if any of you out there are using Muquit's wwwcount as a web counter, you might want to subscribe... <grin> And while the following had nothing to do with hypermail, I thought it was worth mentioning... One of the messages came in with the following From: line:Received on Mon 29 Mar 1999 11:37:08 AM GMT
From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?H=E9ctor?= =?iso-8859-1?Q?_Gonz=E1lez?=
<gonrod_at_servidor.unam.mx>
When I replied to it, that string got converted to: On Thu, 11 Mar 1999, [iso-8859-1] H<E9>ctor[iso-8859-1] Gonz<E1>lez wrote: I thought that was cute, since now my archive reads: On Thu, 11 Mar 1999, [iso-8859-1] Hector[iso-8859-1] Gonzalez wrote: ^ ^ these are the converted characters | | The message in question is viewable at: <http://wwwcount.yeehaw.com/archives/9903/0028.shtml>
Ok, I better stop now and find a way to go to bed... It's sad when you
try to take a nap around 2 in the afternoon but get woken up by screaming sirens half an hour later because some twit thought it was fun to put a building across the street on fire... Then you fall asleep around 5 and don't wake up till 8 and now, at 2:30am, I can't fall back asleep...blah...
