 Adding these to your ~/.hmrc will do approximately that: reverse = 1
thread_file_depth=1

 Hypermail does not support this.
 Would a fixed number of lines provide a useful summary under many conditions, or would it make more sense to try to identify the first sentence (with some minimum and maximum byte length)?
