This recent discussion reminds me of a basic benefit of the approach we took
in enhancing v1.02 - we had an ".attachments" subdirectory, and attachments
to message NNNN went in a subdirectory for that message,
.attachments/NNNN/
The only potential for name conflicts is if someone attaches two files with the same name to a message. I think the optional prefix of "att-" is a good idea, if the implementor wants to avoid the risk of someone being cute with attached files.
